Here is a step by step process of how to make a fondant wood grain effect cake board. I made a cake board look like wood out by using fondant in just 10 easy steps. 4. Using your Dresden/veining tool, start making horizontal lines across the fondant board in even width apart. ( Let me just tell you how long it took me to figure out what this tool is called becuase no where actually tells you! It only says “8 piece set for fondant decorating!” … So I learned something new and now you did too! ) 6. After, make almond shapes that don’t all the way connect. Then, add small ones in the middle of it. Or another way to think of it is leaf shaped without the stem of the leaf. Put one on almost each board. Make one line for the left side of the leaf and then another one on the other to make it to make the left side of the leaf shape. They don’t have to connect, as they are supposed to look like a knot on a piece of wood.( See below) 7. Add long lines down the rest of the plank and lines going around the almond shape. (See above) 8. Once you’ve finished all the lines, using a small brush, paint brown food gel into the groves and knots on the planks. (Basically everywhere the wood is the darkest). (I only used food coloring at this point, no alcohol was mixed in yet.) 9. When you have added the brown in each of the grooves, dip your brush in alcohol and brush the gel across the planks of using the gel in the grooves. This will help distributethe color to the rest of the board. It should spread smoothly and give it a natural wood look. 10. Add color or brush it across more to make it the way you want it. There you have it. Simple but so realistic. 🙂 It really took my cake to the next level with such an awesome board as the background, and I think they really loved it. How To Make Fondant Look Like Wood
You guys, this was easier than I thought and I actually impressed myself with it. I had the priviledge and honor of a friend asking me to make his grooms cake. Although I have made one before, knowing him, I wanted to make it truly special. He wasn’t really sure what he wanted and let me take the reigns. So, I decided to give this a try! I love when customers give me freedom because this is when the true creativity sparks! My favorite is the easy going people, because this is where I can try things I haven’t done before and really gain either a new talent or just a new experience to learn from haha!
Decorating cake boards wasn’t something I really did before but I felt this needed just a touch of something special. After all, you only get married once right?RELATED: How to make Mr. Potato Head Cake
