June Date 2015: New Orleans Food Tour
This post may contain affiliate links, please read my full disclosure : here Experience some of the most delicious food New Orleans is known for in a New Orleans Food Tour. Learn a little history along the way of what makes our food uniquely New Orleans. How I love you so! Our 4th date of the year was a New Orleans Food Tour and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The tour is catered more towards tourists. It was something different and new for us to do and we get to taste of all the famous cuisines we have here. (I mean that’s a win in our book!) I think it’s important to be tourist in our own town.(Check out our other touristy times here) Although we’ve already had everything countless times (we even cook most ourselves!), It was nice to review the history, go to fancy restaurants and taste their fabulous food. Before the tour start, you’re allowed to buy a cocktail while waiting to begin. ( Let me just mention right here that there are many different food tours that happen in New Orleans, and this is just one of them. Each may be a little different in what the offer but most will probably be mostly the same food, just maybe different restaurants. Check Groupon for discounted rates!) The tour we chose was the New Orleans French Quarter Tasting Tour which was approximately 3 hours long and priced between $30-40. We meet a few couples from different parts of the US including Michigan, Texas, and Florida. (We were the only locals- haha!) Samples we tried: seafood gumbo, muffalettas, red beans and rice, bacon pralines, turtle soup, and gelato. All the samples equaled up to a nice meal. Be sure to have you walking shoes on, as this is a walking tour that takes you to some of the top restuarants and stores in the city. Arnaud’s and Tujague’s were among the first stops, which are some of the oldest establishments in the city. We also visited Laura’s Candies & Pralines (oldest candy shop in New Orleans) where we could pick up goodies like truffles, beignet mix, and more pralines. (Photo by Laura’s Candies) Laura’s Candies gives you a sample of the bacon pralines and send you home with a regular praline to go. (If you never had one, they are delicious and are world famous for theirs). If you don’t know what a praline is, its basically a sugar rush. haha! A praline is made up of mainly sugar and pecans. It is a tasty little treat and really one is all you need. We really enjoyed the fact that we weren’t just sitting at a table the whole time and it wasn’t a revolving door of plate after plate. Walking and exploring each restaurant to really take in the culture and sites was a really great way to immerse yourself in the culture. I think it is worth the money, but it’s always nice to save some money as well. Groupon almost always has a coupon for a food tour. Don’t be afraid to be a tourist in your own town. It might seem silly because you live there, but I find we put off exploring our city BECAUSE we can go anytime. Well…now’s a good time as any! 🙂 We have filled our bellies this month, its onto the next month. July is a hot month so I kept that in mind for our 5th date of the year.
