The Best Cake Decorating Tools for Beginners
This post may contain affiliate links, please read my full disclosure : here It’s no secret that baking is kind of my thing. I just love cooking in general, but baking is where my heart lies. Unfortunately, my body just can’t handle all those sweets, so I don’t do it as often as I would like. It also can get pretty pricey, especially when trying new things. This is why I love when people ask me to bake for them because I get all the joys of making it without the sugar overload. Let me just preface this with, I am not a professional baker. Everything is self-taught with all the trials and errors in between. You can see how I’ve made some of these cakes here. I’ve bought tons of tools, pans, cookie cutters, sprinkles and everything under the sun. (no seriously, I have a whole armoire for just baking supplies). There are tools that I love and some I could live without. Nowadays, they make tools for every little thing, but here are my favorite tools for decorating that I can’t live without and can be used in multiple ways. Most tools are only a few dollars up to $20 which is perfect for my bank account if you ask me. Below are my favorites: I LOVE these types of mat. It can be used in multiple ways. It is BPA, FDA, and dishwasher safe. It can withstand extreme temperatures. You can bake cookies right on the mat or freeze items right on the mat. Some of my favorites ways I use it are featured below. I love using it as a mat to hold all the mess in one place. It also is perfect for rolling out dough for pies or pizza with their circle guides, but the main reason I use it is to make fondant decorations. With all the quick guide measurements, it’s perfect for all my baking needs. Just be sure to not use something too sharp or it will cut through the mat. Fondant rolling pin is definitely essential for cake decorating. I like things that are small. Small whisks, small measuring cups, etc. Small is just kind of my thing. This rolling pin is perfect, not just for fondant but pastry as well. The bands help with rolling your fondant out evenly to 1/8 or 1/16 in height. It is easy to clean as well. I have since bought a big fondant rolling pin as well to roll out fondant to cover cakes, but you can use a regular rolling pin as well. The small one I still use all the time for decorations. For sculpting fondant and modeling chocolate, this is the toolkit I use. Now Wilton has discontinued this set, so I am hoping to find an alternative for you, but for now, I’ll give you the one I use. To be honest, I did not pay the price that is linked here. I think they upcharged because it is discontinued. Check out more on Amazon for other toolkits. I can’t tell you how they are but I’m sure ones that are similar will do just fine. The Baker’s Blade is another one of those universal tools. You can chop, measure, scoop, lift and scrap with this bad boy! I use this one with almost every cake I make. It’s metal and super easy to clean and on Amazon it’s only about $7 bucks. This is almost a no-brainer. If you make cakes, you need a spatula. I decided to include the assorted pack, but mainly I only use the large angled one as you probably will too. Angled spatulas work the best because it keeps your hands away from the cake. The biggest one helps you scrap the whole side of the cake evenly. I don’t have the smallest one, but I have a feeling I would use it a time or two. The cake stand was a game changer when I started to really decorate cakes. To smooth the icing on the cake evenly, this was the way to go! You can lock it into position when you one to work on just one side of the cake as well. It also makes it a little taller on your counter, which is a plus! My 55-piece set has been amazing. I haven’t had to buy any extra really (except tip #1,2, & 3 because of decorating cookies with many icing colors). I never have to worry about losing any because they come in this handy case. It even has room for adding more to it. It comes with a few extra large tips and 2 flower nails which is makes it a perfect beginners pack for decorating cakes. There are tons of hacks out there about saving you on piping bags, like using saran wrap inside the bag or using Ziploc bags or getting cloth ones. For me, using saran wrap is an extra process to an already time crunch. Ziploc bags just don’t work well for me, and having an abundance of cloth ones can get expensive. For $20 bucks, you can get 100 bags? I’ll take it. Couplers are not a necessity but it does make things so much easier. Some prefer to use the tips and piping bag without them, which works well when dealing with only 1 tip. I like to use a coupler in case I decide to do different decorating tips with the same colored icing. You can easily exchange the tips without making a mess. Don’t forget to get at least one or two big couplers for the large decorating tips. I hope this helps! Let me know what is your favorite tool! For Cake How To’s : visit here Feeling crafty? Go here.
